£300m of government investment in transport is set to be announced, but concerns have been raised that Cumbria could be neglected.

The Chancellor is set to reveal the major transport investment plans in his Budget speech tomorrow.

This includes giving the green light to the HS3 rail project between Manchester and Leeds - part of Britain's "largest programme of rail investment since the Victorian age".

However Workington MP Sue Hayman says that Cumbria could be left out of the major investment plans.

Earlier this month it was revealed that feasibility studies would be carried out to expand the A66 and A69 roads, prompting questions as to why the A595 was left out, a crucial route to west Cumbria particularly bearing in mind the new Nuclear plant at Moorside.

Mrs Hayman said: "The Government is quick to talk of its Northern Powerhouse and set up bodies such as Transport for the North, but its actions never match its rhetoric when it comes to the poor transport infrastructure that my constituents have to contend with, day in, day out.

“It’s time that the Government realised that 'the north' does not stop at Lancaster, especially when it comes to improving our transport system. I pressed this point recently with Andrew Jones, the Transport Minister, and have urged the Department for Transport to make sure that Cumbria does not get left behind at the expense of the northern city regions.

“We need action now to improve our roads and rail services. People and businesses in west Cumbria, particularly the nuclear industry, need more than warm words or the promise of yet another study into the A66 and A595.

"West Cumbria is about to see unprecedented levels of investment, and it’s critical that we have the infrastructure in place to support that.”
