KBR has recently opened a new office at Westlakes Science Park.

Less than 10 miles from the Sellafield site, the expansion continues the company’s longstanding association with West Cumbria, since initially becoming the lead integration partner of the Programme and Project Partners (PPP) contract at Sellafield in 2019.

KBR has a team of more than 400 members, half of which are based in both Cumbria and Warrington.

They provide a range of expert capabilities, including programme and project management, project controls, and commercial services.

KBR’s goal is to impact the local communities positively.

Ian Hudson, head of nuclear at KBR, said: "The PPP contract has provided us with a long-term opportunity to support the decommissioning of Sellafield, develop a talented nuclear workforce, and work alongside a world-class supply chain.

“We are committed to providing local employment opportunities that come with transferable skills that in the future could be used to support missions across the globe."

A new initiative by KBR includes the Project Controls Academy which is addressing industry skill gaps and creating a sustainable talent development pathway that provides careers for people from the community.

The firm has also formed a partnership with MissionCX, a specialist commissioning firm based at Westlakes, sharing apprenticeship funding to create more local career prospects.

The ribbon on KBR's new office was cut by John Grainger, executive director of the Energy Coast Business Cluster.
