Large Business of the Year, Sponsored by Cartmell Shepherd

Genesis Homes

Genesis Homes, founded by Nicky Gordon in 2017, specialises in building high specification, energy-efficient homes across Cumbria.

Over the past 12 months, output has increased by 50 per cent due to rising demand, with the company completing a record 154 homes, up from 97 the previous year, and achieving 129 new home sales.

To boost brand awareness, Genesis Homes employed in-house marketing specialists in late 2023 and adapted its approach to focus on direct sales conversions.

This strategy led to an eightfold increase in website traffic and helped sell out developments at Rheda North Park in Whitehaven and the carbon net zero EcoGen project in Calthwaite. The company currently operates across eight sites and plans to construct nearly 140 properties at new developments in Carlisle, Seaton, near Workington, and Kirkby Lonsdale.

The company’s high standards were recognised at the North West Residential Property Awards, where its Eamont Chase development near Penrith won ‘Best Large Development’. Genesis Homes is expanding further with two new Director roles for construction and commercial operations, filled by experienced professionals David Graziano and Brett Lilley. Additionally, 21-year-old Josie Scrimgour was promoted to Project Manager, successfully leading several planning applications.

A strong community supporter, Genesis Homes raised significant funds for Sunbeams Music Trust in 2023 through various events. This year, the company will support men’s mental health charity #ANDYSMANCLUB, continuing its commitment to local causes.

Furness Building Society

Founded in 1865, Furness Building Society recently updated its brand identity to celebrate its Cumbrian roots.

The society is implementing a major branch refurbishment programme, which began in Kendal in November 2023, to enhance member interactions, speed up transactions and improve staff working conditions. Despite high street bank closures, Furness Building Society continues to support its members through nine branches that reflect its new brand.

In the past year, Furness modernised its services with the launch of a new digital savings platform, allowing members to manage their accounts online and via an app. This innovation aims to reduce the society’s carbon footprint while ensuring secure and efficient transactions.

Furness Building Society also focuses on regional development, partnering with Nexa Finance to accelerate lending to local property developers. The society offers competitive mortgage rates and has collaborated with Lancet Homes on the Own New scheme to provide low-deposit mortgages.

In February, Furness introduced Green Further Advance mortgage products to encourage energy-efficient home improvements, aligning with the UK’s net zero targets. These products offer competitive rates for investments in solar panels, heat pumps, and insulation.

Furness’s financial health supports its ability to offer high savings rates, exemplified by the launch of the Triple Access Saver with a five per cent interest rate in August 2023. Furness Building Society remains committed to mutual benefit and community support, ensuring its continued success for another 160 years.
