Business Person of the Year, Sponsored by Rachael Bell Wealth Management

Rachel Bell, Lake District Estates

Rachel Bell, Head of Marketing and Business Development at Lake District Estates, is a dynamic leader in Cumbria’s tourism industry. With 16 years at the company, Rachel has significantly impacted both Lake District Estates and the broader regional tourism sector through her commitment to promoting the area, advocating for sustainability, and enhancing accessibility.

Rachel is known for her exceptional communication skills and her ability to inspire her marketing team daily. She has mentored individuals like Ben McGregor, who won the Cumbria Tourism Awards’ Unsung Hero 2023.

Her dedication to sustainability, stemming from a Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, has led her to spearhead the company’s carbon net zero strategy and secure substantial grant funding, including 50 per cent of the refurbishment costs for a café at Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway. She has also campaigned successfully for accessibility improvements, such as the Changing Places facility at Ravenglass, enhancing the region’s inclusivity.

Rachel’s voluntary roles further demonstrate her influence; she is Vice Chair of Cumbria Tourism, contributes to sustainable travel initiatives, and supports local community projects. She chairs the CSR committee at Lake District Estates, directing funds to charitable causes like the Cumbria Community Foundation and Growing Well. Additionally, she was instrumental in launching a community hopper bus for Ullswater, motivating businesses to support the scheme.

Euan Hutton, Sellafield Ltd

Euan Hutton, Chief Executive Officer of Sellafield in Cumbria, has demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment over the past year, after being appointed as interim CEO in 2023.

His hands-on approach, including direct engagement with employees at all levels, has fostered a culture of inclusivity and collaboration.

He has strengthened relationships with key stakeholders, aligning Sellafield’s operations with societal goals and regulatory requirements.

Euan prioritises employee development and welfare, introducing robust leadership development programmes to nurture future leaders and implementing comprehensive health and wellness initiatives.

The now CEO first joined the company in 1991 as a graduate with a physics degree, he is great example of someone who has been able to work their way from the shop floor to the highest levels of a company and has consistently used his experience at all levels to try and make Sellafield a better.

Euan's inspirational leadership and dedication to the site and its workforce makes him a standout candidate for the Business Person of the Year award. 

Mark Telford, Forth

Forth, a company founded by Mark and Nicola Telford in 2000, has grown from a small home-based business into a leading engineering firm with a team of 48, delivering innovative solutions across various industries.

Entering its 25th year in November 2024, Forth has achieved a record year with a 50 per cent increase in turnover to £4.56 million and gross profits nearing £1 million.

The company, under Mark's visionary leadership, distinguishes itself by providing bespoke solutions for safety-critical and regulated industries, such as nuclear decommissioning, oil and gas, marine, and renewables.

Forth’s unique approach emphasizes collaboration and partnership, enabling rapid and effective problem-solving. Notable innovations include technology that accelerates nuclear decommissioning and reduces costs, such as its skip-tipping technology showcased in 2024. The company has also secured significant contracts with Magnox, reflecting its expertise in nuclear decommissioning.

Committed to its Cumbria roots, Forth expanded operations at Cleator Moor and Barrow, creating new jobs and opportunities. The company fosters a culture of empowerment, supporting employees like Graham Cartwright, who rose from apprentice to Projects Director, and Chloe Ferguson, who manages major international projects.

Forth’s community engagement is profound, from local regeneration projects and supporting sports clubs to initiatives like Whitehaven Community Hub and various charities. Mark, a passionate advocate for Cumbria, continues to champion local development through initiatives that enhance regional prosperity, demonstrating a strong commitment to both his business and community growth.
