A Cumbrian distillery has won a national award for its vodka.

The Great British Food Awards announced its 2024 winners on October 28 and Grasmere Distillery's Sugar Beet Vodka received a bronze award.

The annual awards, now in their tenth year, were established in 2014 to highlight the best home-grown ingredients in the UK and the dedicated individuals who produce and use them.

The awards cover a broad spectrum, including dairy, cheese, meats, artisan drinks, and savoury preserves.

Every year, a panel of highly acclaimed chefs, food critics, and influencers taste hundreds of products to judge the best.

This year's panel included TV personality and wine expert Olly Smith, Aldi's spirits buying director Andy Maxwell, mixologist Merlin Griffiths, and Club Soda founder Laura Willoughby MBE.

They were joined by Jacob Liddle, who runs Jiddlers Tipple, and Great British Food editor Holly Shackleton.

Together, they sampled and deliberated to decide the winners.

Paul Abbott, the founder of Grasmere Distillery, shared his enthusiasm about the award.

Mr Abbott said: "Collecting this award is fantastic, especially coming off the back of the launch of our Founders Club earlier this year.

"Receiving national recognition like this is the icing on the cake and recognises the hard work and dedication of us all.

"It also shows that as a distinctively different distillery, we are heading in the right direction, our unique climate-friendly, grain-to-glass ethos is gaining traction as part of Cumbria’s proud and highly successful food and drink offering."

Grasmere Distillery's Sugar Beet Vodka is described as an 'ultra-clean, intriguing spirit with a unique character', smoother than grain or potato vodkas, with subtle orchard notes of apple and pear, and a hint of sugar.

The vodka is available in 70cl bottles, priced at £31.50.

The distillery prides itself on its 'unique climate-friendly, grain-to-glass ethos', which is becoming recognised as part of Cumbria's successful food and drink offerings.
